Our environmental work connects measurable environmental outcomes with community benefit—from stormwater managed and native habitat restored to clean-energy infrastructure, digital connectivity, environmental education, and neighborhood assets designed for long-term community use.

Solar Charging & Bike Repair Stations

NEWCC operates and maintains four solar-powered, WiFi-equipped charging stations throughout the North End. The wifi at these charging stations is accessed anywhere from 200 to more than 500 times each month. They have become neighborhood gathering spots, cultivating community. NEWCC plans to install several more stations throughout our service area, including Highland Park and Hamtramck, in the coming months, ensuring equitable internet and energy access for the community.

NEWCC has installed eight bike-repair stations throughout the North End, Hamtramck, and Highland Park as a complement to the solar charging stations. The bike-repair stations are fully equipped with tools, an air pump, and instructional videos on common bike repairs. Our goal is to make biking more accessible for the community and subsequently reduce reliance on high-emission modes of transportation.

Annual Environmental Tour

Each October, NEWCC and Solar Neighbors bring residents, partners, and environmental leaders together to explore community-based approaches to sustainability and resilience.

What began as our annual Solar Tour has grown beyond solar to highlight clean energy, green infrastructure, environmental health, community stewardship, and other solutions taking root across our communities.

Through site visits, hands-on activities, educational sessions, and conversations with practitioners and community leaders, the tour helps make environmental solutions visible, understandable, and accessible.
