Safe, stable, and affordable housing is fundamental to strong communities. NEWCC works to create housing and land-use strategies that help residents remain in their neighborhoods, build stability, and share in the benefits of community investment.

Our approach goes beyond developing housing. We believe land and housing are community assets that should be stewarded in ways that protect affordability, strengthen neighborhoods, and create opportunities for residents today and for generations to come.

Community Land Trust

In 2015, NEWCC established the Storehouse of Hope Community Land Trust (CLT), the first community land trust established in the city of Detroit.

The CLT provides a model for creating permanently affordable housing while protecting community interests in land over the long term. Through the community land trust model, the land is held in trust while residents have opportunities for homeownership—helping balance individual wealth-building with permanent affordability for future families.

This approach helps protect community investment, reduce displacement, and ensure that housing created as affordable housing can remain affordable over time.

Housing as Community Infrastructure

Housing is more than a building. It is the foundation from which people build families, relationships, health, financial stability, and connection to community.

NEWCC works with residents and partners to preserve and create affordable housing, responsibly steward land, and develop approaches that respond to neighborhood priorities rather than allowing development to determine the future of communities without them.

Our housing and land stewardship work is grounded in a simple principle: Development should create lasting benefits for the people and communities already there.
